Gatehouse Yard, off the High Street, dates from Tudor times or perhaps even earlier. The impressive entrance porch was once hung with two massive wooden gates providing entry into the very extensive St Andrews vicarage gardens which lay behind. There were, until fairly recent years twelve very old cottages within the gates, but only one now remains. The shop to the right of the gate was then Brewers newsagents which was later incorporated into the McDowells business.
