Many of the features in this picture dating from 1903 showing the lower end of the High Street have long disappeared - not least the freedom from traffic problems! Carters sweet shop protruding in the street from the left hand side, just before the Town Bridge, was removed in 1911 to make way for the new entrance to Courtaulds factory. Previously a very narrow entry had led down tot he Old Tan Yard. The large building to the right was Halstead's fifteenth century Guildhall, but sadly was pulled down in the 1960's to make for what is now Martins Newsagents. A feature to observe in many of these old pictures is that everyone had a hat on when out of doors, and the girls invariably wore a pinafore at all times.
