Back to - Then and Now Scenes 13 - 24

This scene showing the bottom end of the High Street in the 1920's shows that traffic was beginning to oust the horse as a means of personal transport. A sign of the times is the presence of Brown's Garage on the left - just above the Royal Oak public house. Petrol was not sold from 'pumps' but in 2 gallon cans. Note the high telephone poles in the High Street. They were the cause of some controversy when erected in 1903 when the telephone service first came to Halstead - but what would the objectors think today if they could see the jungle of posts, poles and signs that now reside?
