This is the Halstead Grammar School for Boys taken in 1906. In the same year it closed and the pupils were transferred to Earls Colne Grammer School. The Halstead Grammar School was founded in 1594 by Dame Mary Ramsey for 'forty free scholars'. The premises have been altered several times, this picture showing the exterior as it became after rebuilding in 1862 where an extra storey was added.Inside the right-hand door the wall is decorated with carefully preserved graffiti consisting of the initials of many of the pupils who attended. It is now used on the ground floor for retail, and above hosts the Halstead Conservative Club.
