This 1898 view of the lower end of Mount Hill shows that the entrances to the town were then narrow and muddy. It is hard to realise that when these ladies were talking their 'airing' it is highly probable that no motor car had ever passed that way. Cycling was then a mode of transport fast grown in popularity and riders coming down the hill would occasionally find themselves in trouble by misjudging the steepness and the curves in the road. Alongside the perambulator on the left-hand side of the road is where the Mount Hill spring was then located before being moved across the road in December 1907, where it still stands today.
