This image from around 1905 shows what must have been one of the very first motor cars in Halstead. The speed limit was then twenty miles per hour and policemen kept a wary eye on motorists as the limit was frequently exceeded. The beech trees in St Andrew's Churchyard are beginning to attain a respectable size and looking very attractive although obscuring the view of the church. The trees were to become much higher and eventually, in the 1980's, a few suffered storm damage and were removed. The very attractive cast-iron gas lamps and standards were removed many years ago.
