In 1910 the accent was on personal service to shop customers - no 'help yourself' then - hence large staffs were necessary. Baker, Son and Co. in Head Street appear to be stockests of regulation uniform for the newly opened Girls' Grammar School. Apprentice Jack Evans is on the left of the group and the lady on the left, with hands on hips, is Miss Day. The lady on the right is Miss Dedman. The left hand shop has since been altered by constructing a passageway between the two shops to allow access to the living quarters above without having to pass through either of the shops.
