North Mill, commonly known as Frosts Mill, as it looked in the early 1900's. In 1720 Thomas Frost took over a post mill on this site and this was replaced by a smock mill in the early 1800's. In 1914 steam replaced wind as the motive power and in 1922 the redundant cap and sails were removed. The last of the wooden structures was taken down in 1947 leaving only the brick base which is still there today and now used for storage. The chimney too remains and is the only industrial chimney now surviving in Halstead. Once there were half a dozen or more. The mill is still owned by members of the Frost family.

Below we see a photograph of a now disused railway carriage parked on the roadside of Mill Chase. It was originally obtained by the owners of Frost Mill and used by the workers during their breaks. It was later used for a time by local "Jazz" music enthusiasts where members would play records!
