Bridges have been among the chief environmental casualties of our age due to the ever increasing demand of road traffic. As long ago as 1857 the Halstead Local Board warned John Sadd and Sons, timber merchants, about the possibility of damage arising form their crossing of the Parsonage Street Bridge although it refers to the bridge shown here or an earlier, possibly timber, one is not clear. This view dating from around 1910 shows a sturdy brick structure probably quite capable of carrying present day light traffic but because of its narrow width it has subsequently been widened to allow for easy passage of larger vehicles in use today.
