| Upper High Street |
 | |

A very old postcard view of the top of the town where Head Street joins the High Street. We can be certain that this picture was taken before 1887 because in that year the obelisk on the Market Hill was taken down and the fountain to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee was erected in its place. A particularly notable feature is the shop on the corner of Head Street which then had only two storeys but now has three. The buildings on the right are virtually unchanged to this day and reference to old prints shows that the roof lines have not altered over several centuries although the shop fronts as you can see do frequently.
