| Trinity Street 2 |

This image appears to be another of A.J. Brown's early efforts with his camera and is likely to be one of the first ever taken in Halstead. The Temperance Hotel, built on the left of Trinity Street in 1876, does not appear in this picture so we are going back a long way. The area in the right-hand side was then the nursery garden and orchard but now forms the public gardens which were opened in 1901. The large three windowed building in the centre background is the High street Congregational Church, built in 1833 and demolished in the 1950's. The nearer building (immediately behind the hedge) was once a prison becoming Halstead's 1st Police Station in 1841. It lasted in this role until 1850 and then was converted for use as a flour mill. A row of new shops now stands on the site.
