Halstead's Holy Trinity Church was built in 1843/4 through the generosity of Mrs. Mary Gee of Colne House, Earls Colne, who defrayed most of the cost. George Gilbert Scott was the architect. As the spire was nearing completion it collapsed only minutes after the workmen had been called off with the fortunate result that only a few men received slight injuries. The church was no more than fifty years old when this picture was taken. In April 1987 the Church Commissioners declared the church should be made redundant despite a three-year battle by parishioners and well wishers in an effort to save it. Mary Gee also met most of the cost of building St. James' Church at nearby Greenstead Green in 1845 using the same architect.
