Comments: hello citizens of halsead town, i have lived in and around the area for many years now. given the current state of the economy i feel a tescos should be introduce to the town. this is because halsteads shopping center in the high street is becoming dated and customers in and around the area are being driven away to towns such as braintree. halsteads trade representatives have been fighing this for too long, and i feel that the day care center at the bottom of the town should be eliminated and replaced with a thriving tescos. i hope coment is taken seriously as i feel this is a serious issure.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to discover an answer to a question regarding an old building. My Mother, Iris Green, was born and raised in Halstead and her Father, Leonard Leichtenstein Green operated his Gentleman's Hairdressing business in the three storey building located close to the intersection of Hedingham Road and High Street, on the L) side of the Road as you travel towards Hedingham. In May of 2007, this building housed an Antique Store. My question,....."Doesanyone there know what this building was originally used for, or when it was built, and by whom?" If anyone can advise me on this, I would be exremely grateful. Tom et al, please keep up your excellent work in maintaining this very imformative site. Having had a Lambretta 150 twenty seven years ago I sympathise with your endevour to climb that hill and acknowledge that your speed is never going to be a killer, however I still maintain the deer were a wonderful addition to the road and the town and as far as Im concerned its shameful that they have had to be removed. Lets move on and argue about something else ? Road congestion perhaps ?

I didn't mean to start such a heated discussion on here!! I ride a vespa, 125cc so I couldn't go that fast anyway!! Again, I state once more that the deer was placed there to stop berks like you rushing down that hill. Also, if you are hurtling to Earls Colne once you are out the speed limit, please be aware of those unfortunate to be in front of you turning right to Greenstead Green.

It tells me you were both travelling too fast. I apologise if you feel offended.

Still such a lovely town, miss seeing the St. Andrews School building though. Such a shame it was pulled down, have such happy memories of being at that school. Favourite pub has to be The Bull. Always a wonderful atmostphere in there and was especially so during the soccer World Cup. As regards the Loc my Nanna's brother, surname Brazier, used to run that pub. Any info on the Brazier family would be much appreciated. Whilst I was back took a number of photos of Upper Fenn Road (where I used to live) and the Fenn Road area. Can upload them onto the site if anybody wishes to see them. Am planning on returning to Halstead again this year in August for a reunion of ex Hydro Machine Tool employees to be held on 25 August 2007. Hopefully will get to catch up with a number of Halstead people then. See ya in The Bull! Julie

This and the fact that the resident group "The Gateway Eight" disbanded after many enjoyable evenings spent in the male cubicles together.. All the children escaped unharmed but the teachers were rounded up and executed in the music room to the soothing sounds of Daniel O'Donell. The offenders of this crime were never caught due to the fact that our elected leaders are never responcible for anything that happens in the town ! After the school closed it was turned into homes for the Russian Mafia, and later sold on to more normal types. I hope this answers your question... ps. There are plently of large supermarkets in the 15 mile radius, if you're worried about driving to them, how about shopping for decent fresh meat and fuit and veg from the shops in the high street like people used to?

Comments: I live in Halstead and have done for many years but go to Colchester and Braintree to shop at Tesco's and whilst in town we do our other shopping. My family who live in Castle Hedingham shop at Tesco's in Sudbury and again do their other shopping there. If we had a Tesco in Halstead we, and from what I have heard many other people from the surrounding area, would shop there and then do other shopping in Halstead bringing more trade to the town. I know some may say think about the increased traffic, but again we have to drive through Halstead to get to the other Tesco's anyway. Also I think it's a real shame that we will miss out on chance of not only a new main soccer pitch but at least a decent football pitch for all the Halstead youth teams. Any one who has watched our teams playing on the slopes of the Courtalds playing fields will know what I mean.

Comments: There are certain people in this town that seem to think that the "traders" in the high street are there to make the town look attractive and quaint. There not. They are there like any other business to make money, a profit. Why should they recieve any more help than any other business, such as painter and decorator, or mechanics, or anyone else who has a small business and doesnt want any competition. if your product and service is good enough, it will survive. Tesco or Sainsbury will not change this. The town has less chance of survival without the investment from the likes of the big two. Already, there is little investment from our local council, it prefers to promote Braintree. Look at the bigger picture, Halstead used to be an equal with its neighbours, now it is the poor relation. We have no adequate roads in or around the town, no railway, no cinema and had to wait 30 years for a new swimming pool. Lack of investment from government and private finance. But at least we have a Co op and a Somerfields, and some colourful small shops.... Great .....

Comments: Most people will know by now that Braintree DC refused all 3 applications put before the plalnning committee. I know the reactions will be mixed. I moved her last year from a town about half as big again as Halstead. About 15 years ago, Safeways moved from a store about the size of our Somerfields to a bigger one on a site a similar distance from the high street to that proposed by Tesco. Local shops did fold and it became a town of charity shops and cafes used by visitors to the 2/3 times weekly market. The same would happen here except that we don't have a proper market. It's sad for HFC, but surely the need for extra facilities for them ought to be considered separately. It would have been interesting to see whether Tesco would be as philanthropic if the store application was turned down but the new footie ground approved. I feel sorry for busy working mums as well who can't get to the car parks and don't feel they have enough choice in our high street. Choice doesn't have to be provided by supermarkets. Local greengrocers are often cheaper and provide more choice of fruit and veg than supermarkets and yet the only local choice we residents have is the supermarkets or the market 2 mornings a week. Surely Braintree & Halstead councils could be addressing the issues of providing sport and leisure facilities for kids, promoting variety and consumer choice on the high streeet and addressing the parking problems without having to depend on major supermarket chains to do the spadework for them.

I watched last sat and the que out side the shop went a long way up the street. The people that go there r not going 2 stop going there just because there is a tesco in town. I know people that shop at tesco in braintree and still use the shops in the town. I thought compertion was good for the buyers! The good shops in the town should have nothing to fear. What about all the young children that can use the football pitches.

Plod will do nothing unless you are either doubled parked or speeding. So what is the answer ? Im not sure. But what I do know is that if Plod should catch the twats that feel the need to chuck dirt all over the High Street, intimidate people here there and everywhere, and generally vanadalise everything we respect there is only one solution. Make them dress as Morris Men and make them dance every Friday and Saturday night. Im sure that would cure them of their need to make an ass of themselves and it would give a few of us a little bit of weekend entertainment. Or lets flogg 'em !!!

(im on a role here) the last time i phoned the police about the chavs (yesterday morning at 4am) they advised me to telephone the braintree district council and speak to them as they have an officer on patrol or something.. i must have come across as being a complete berk on the phone! my faith in local policing has quite literally hit rock bottom im afraid

Didn't want to weave or work in a foundry, which were about the only options then. I'm writing about umpy-um years ago. So I travelled and eventually found a small town just like Halstead used to be. It was a pleasent place with friendly people and small independant shops in the High Street. Then Tescos, Sainsburys, Waitrose et al moved in and for the last ten years I have watched a nice little town die. Please don't let it happen to my birthplace. And yes, I'm a TRUE Halsteadian. ie Not born in Colchester hospital. Very interesting site for bringing back the memories.

Comments: Im sorry Mr Reaper, but I have to take issue with you on this one. I believe its wrong to talk ill of the dead. In case you didnt know, Sible Hedingham died last year after slipping into a coma in 1974. An autopsy revealed that the village had been clinically dead for a number of years and was only kept "alive" because it was on the bus route to Yeldham. Police believe it died of natural causes and foul play was not involved. A service of rememberance will be held at the phone box in Pretoria Road , Halstead for those who wish to pass on their condolences. Our thoughts are with the North sea, who has managed to miss this possible environmental disaster of having this rotting corpse dumped in its wonderful backyard of oil and gas rigs, raw sewage, spanish trawlers and Lowestoft.

Comments: I love Halstead and am a frequent visitor but I really must pass comment on the seemingly imminent arrival of the major supermarket chains in town. If Tesco and Sainsbury's are allowed a free rein they will undoubtedly kill off half of the local shops in the High Street. Somerfield and Solar will also bite the dust unless they are willing and able to adapt to the new trading conditions. In other words Halstead could turn into yet another identikit shopping area! Choice will eventually only exist if the major supermarkets choose to offer it. What residents need to do is to badger Solar and Somerfield to offer the prices and quality that Sainsbury and Tesco do. The existing supermarkets are convenient and staffed by friendly and obliging staff often working under incredible stress. Let's not see them sacrficed at the altar of alleged choice!

Comments: I think Tesco would be great. It's so much cheaper than Solar and Somerfield, and, contrary to popular belief, just because we own cars does not mean that we shop out of town. I enjoy shopping at Tesco but I do my weekly shop in Halstead for convenience. Tesco would be nicely out of the way, so's not to cause the major traffic problems Sainsbury's would on Colchester road.(We all know it will) So come on planning office. Give us our Tesco!!

Sainsbury's need to give their backhander to someone very quick and very soon, I wonder who that will be ?

Comments: I thought i'd keep all the ex-halsteadians up to date with recent news. The next couple of years look very interesting with the news that tesco's and sainsbury's are both planning to move into the town. Sainsburys have applied for planning permission at the old Ciba Corning site on colchester road and Tesco's have offered halstead Town football club a 12 acre state of the art ground (inc. 4 pitches!) opposite star stile, in exchange for the current 1.5 acre ground. I can't see HTFC turning that one down somehow! I expect there to be casualties in this supermarket war. Namely either Solar or Somerfield (my money would be on Somerfield going). Another proposal brought forward is to redevelop the land east of the high street (a woodland area between the high st and parsonage street) which will involve new housing, shopping units and parkland inc. a fountain/statue designed locally. As for Richard De Clare (for the benefit of the person asking) that too has seen some changes with a nice new assembly hall built over the old dinner hall and the boxing club, youth centre, nature garden and demountable classrooms have all been torn down to make way for a new much expanded playing field. Hope this has been of interest to some of you.

Comments: I am trying to locate a friend, by the name of Debbie (Deborah) Kent, who I met while on a working holiday in England (London) in 1973. We lost contact in the early 1980's. She grew up in Halstead-her family resided at 68 Colne Road, East Mill House, in the 1960's-1970's. I do not know her parents'names, however there were 2 other girls in the family besides Debbie(about 19 years of age in '73). She had a younger sister, then about 12 as well as an older, married sister working as a hairdresser in Halstead. I have resided in Canada all my life and the last time I visited England, in 1976, was the last time I was able to see Debbie. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone with any information about the family and their whereabouts.

Comments: I moved to Halstead 4 years ago approx. I love this place and feels like I'v lived here forever. I have bought every book imaginable on Halstead (Doreen Potts - a huge thank you!) and soak up every bit of history imaginable. Anyhow, can anyone shed some light on the following:- The Howe. This is a beautiful house once owned by SA Courtauld in Hedingham Road, sadly now in terrible condition. Does anyone know what is going to happen to it? (I presume it is listed). Does anyone know who now owns it as it appears derelict? Does anyone have any photos of it? One last question - Does anyone have a Courtauld family tree or know where I can obtain one from - have tried everything on the internet and can't find out much at all. I am really interested in the houses they used to own like The Howe, Gosfield Hall, Cut Hedge, Bocking Place and so on and would love to research the rest of them (particularly the one in High Garrett - if anyone knows what the house was and which Courtauld lived there. So sorry to ramble, but as you can probably tell, I'm rather passionate about Halstead and it's history. Many thanks for a fantastic site. (PS Does anyone know what the fate of the Savoy and Enpire will be?)

Comments: A little note to keep you ex-pats up to date. McDowells is no more:( it was replaced by Townrow last year. Roy McDowell retired a few years ago and all but the gift shop have changed hands. The current most popular drinking spots are: Scenario's (a large Witherspoons style pub which used to be the Co-op department store along Bridge street), and CO9's a Cafe bar/night club located below the Sportsman (now known as Redds). A new £2m swimming pool is currently being built at the front of the sports centre (about time too!). Greenwood School is now closed and has been turned into houses, and Priory Hall is no longer occupied by the Ramsey School. It is currently being temporarily used as the youth centre. The old youth centre was pulled down to make way for extentions to Richard De Clare school. Halstead is now only 7 miles away from the London overspill (Braintree) and so i am making the most of this peacefull little town before it starts to grow dramatically like Braintree has. Unfortunately i think its only a matter of time as 3 large housing complexes have been built already within the last few years. Well if anyone remembers me (if you're around the age of 24 you may do) email me. im still a Halstead guy so i can give you all the latest goss:) Cheers

Obadiah Kemp (born 1846) and his wife Louisa Stammers(1846) and Joseph Henry Tiffin(1843) and his wife Emily Diss (1842). In the 1901 census Joseph Tiffin was the beerhouse keeper of the Anchor Inn 89 North Street. I would be very interested to hear from anyone connected to these families. So I am wondering if anyone knows of such a manor or any mention of a "de Halsted" in Essex history. Apparently 'Halsted' and 'Halstead' are interchangeable as I don't think my predecessors were too fastidious on spelling. Happy New Year to all,
