| Comments: I left a message on this site, some years ago regarding GG Grandfather Samuel HOVELL who was born in Halstead about 1807 ..ish. His son Thomas OVEL was born there 16 Dec 1838. We also have the complication of not only the variation in spelling of HOVEL, but the addition of BLADEN / BLAYDEN as either a hyphen or a middle name. Have changed my email address since last posting, but would love to hear from anyone with any information regarding this most elusive family. Regards to all. Irene Taylor - Tasmania | |

Finding an answer would mean a lot to me and my Mother, Iris. Respectively yours, Cathie Connor

| Comments: Hi Tom, I do think it would be nice to see a mention of Frank Smith & Sons, especially Harold Smith and his wife Effie who were both well respected towns people. Both very loyal members of St Andrews Church and born of the town at the turn of the Century. Still remebered fondly by many locals. Frank Smiths I do believe is the oldest surviving independent business in the town and was the oringnal supplier of many of the old prints that local historians enjoy using. | |

| Comments: Hi Tom et al: I have just finished reading Doreen Pott's excellent book "A Look Back At Halstead". Unfortunately, I have been unable to discover an answer to a question regarding an old building. My Mother, Iris Green, was born and raised in Halstead and her Father, Leonard Leichtenstein Green operated his Gentleman's Hairdressing business in the three storey building located close to the intersection of Hedingham Road and High Street, on the L) side of the Road as you travel towards Hedingham. In May of 2007, this building housed an Antique Store. My question,....."Doesanyone there know what this building was originally used for, or when it was built, and by whom?" If anyone can advise me on this, I would be exremely grateful. Tom et al, please keep up your excellent work in maintaining this very imformative site. Regards, Cathie (in Canada) (*_*) cath8348@shaw.ca | |

| Comments: Hi there, I've been told that a woodframe house was moved in Halstead on Blue Bridge Hill. As far as i can gather it was hauled in one piece from the foot of the hill/road to the top. This may have happened around 40-50years ago. Does anyone remember which building it was and if there are any articles/sites relating to it? | |

I wish I could have spent more time there because in the short time I stayed, the memories came flooding back. Unlike so many palces so little had changed. In the late 40s and early 50s my parents had been owners of the Bull Hotel and I went to Gosfield school. In the mid 50s my parents divorced and my mother became landlady of the Kings Arms on Headingam Road. ( long gone) even though you do have a photo of it on your site. I wold love to hear from anyone who knew me in thoes days or my friend Dermot Killoran who died in 2002. I wonder what happened to Janean Crouch, John Read, Barry Brag, Mervin Brag. Peter Simpson

Having had a Lambretta 150 twenty seven years ago I sympathise with your endevour to climb that hill and acknowledge that your speed is never going to be a killer, however I still maintain the deer were a wonderful addition to the road and the town and as far as Im concerned its shameful that they have had to be removed. Lets move on and argue about something else ? Road congestion perhaps ?

I didn't mean to start such a heated discussion on here!! I ride a vespa, 125cc so I couldn't go that fast anyway!! (Apologies to any readers who get stuck behind me whilst climbing that hill!!)I also drive a car and always adhere to the speed limits.

| Comments: Sairy my friend, if you are hitting the spot where you can see the deer at the speed limit which I believe is still 70 mph, then quite frankly I dont want to be anywhere near you when you hit that bridge. Again, I state once more that the deer was placed there to stop berks like you rushing down that hill. Also, if you are hurtling to Earls Colne once you are out the speed limit, please be aware of those unfortunate to be in front of you turning right to Greenstead Green. | |

| Comments: My driving skills are probably no better or no worse than anyone else, however, I do not travel into a thirty limit, into a bend, on a bridge at a distance that I may crash into the car in front of me because they (the car in front of you) cannot tell the difference between a statue and an animal. It tells me you were both travelling too fast. I apologise if you feel offended. | |

I feel very offened by your remarks, as you do not know me or the bike that i ride, (which is not a sports bike), or the circumstances or road conditions which nearly lead to a nasty accident. As i do not know which vehicle or how you drive, or perhaps you are one of those drivers that drive to close to my back wheel, and overtake to close, nearly catching my handlebars, so please keep your nasty comments to yourself until you know the full facts.

I seem to recall it didn't cause shop closures then and in fact when Tesco's took over Fine Fare, it closed...

| Comments: Great Site! Keep up the good work. I emigrated to Perth, Western Australia in 1990 and was back visiting family and friends during June 2006. Had a wonderful time visiting Halstead again. Still such a lovely town, miss seeing the St. Andrews School building though. Such a shame it was pulled down, have such happy memories of being at that school. Favourite pub has to be The Bull. Always a wonderful atmostphere in there and was especially so during the soccer World Cup. As regards the Loc my Nanna's brother, surname Brazier, used to run that pub. Any info on the Brazier family would be much appreciated. Whilst I was back took a number of photos of Upper Fenn Road (where I used to live) and the Fenn Road area. Can upload them onto the site if anybody wishes to see them. Am planning on returning to Halstead again this year in August for a reunion of ex Hydro Machine Tool employees to be held on 25 August 2007. Hopefully will get to catch up with a number of Halstead people then. See ya in The Bull! Julie | |

| Comments: My husband has bought me a very large dark blue and white enameled clock face. (Blue face - white roman numerals) On it is the name H C Knight (who I presume is the clock maker) and the name Halstead. We were led to believe that this is from Halstead Station. Can anybody confirm that Halstead station had a clock face like this? I think that it must be at least a hundred years old. What do you think? It is about 3ft round. Thanks for your help. Lets move forward and show the exoisting stores that they need to compete to keep custom | |

| Comments: The Somerfield toilets were closed due to the fact that the council couldnt make it pay. Punters would only have number ones instead of the more lucritive number twos. This and the fact that the resident group "The Gateway Eight" disbanded after many enjoyable evenings spent in the male cubicles together.. I think the council plan to demolish it and use it as a car parking space for extra revenue and also to stop Tesco buying it and turning it into a mini mart super store !!! | |

| Comments: Hello Karina, in answer to your question regarding The Greenwood School, Im afraid it was over run by marauding Town Councillors in the mid nineties. All the children escaped unharmed but the teachers were rounded up and executed in the music room to the soothing sounds of Daniel O'Donell. The offenders of this crime were never caught due to the fact that our elected leaders are never responcible for anything that happens in the town ! After the school closed it was turned into homes for the Russian Mafia, and later sold on to more normal types. I hope this answers your question... ps. You girls used to scare the living daylights out of me... | |

| Comments: So tell me, please ? But why is it that every afternoon between about 2 and 5.30 in the afternoon we have an ambulance "racing" down the high street, horns and sirens blairing. This happens every afternoon. Now dont get me wrong, Im sure theyre doing a fine job attending to whatever situation arrives at their finding, but..... Is there really that much carnage, near death experiences and worse that take place 7 days a week at the same time ?!!! Surely it would be reporteded on the local news of such a high body count second only to that of Iraq ! Has anyone else noticed it ? | |
