Ice Merchant, Fruiterer & Fishmonger - Arthur Buck
In this photograph taken in 1924, is Arthur Buck (right) with his son John, standing in the doorway of his shop at 65, High Street, Halstead, which previously had been run by his father in law - J. A. Bird. He sold fruit, vegetables and fish as well as being an ice merchant. Large blocks of ice 3ft x 3ft x 1ft were delivered by lorry from the Colchester Ice Company and stored in a zinc lined cold store at the rear of the premises. He sold ice to Courtaulds and other establishments in the town where items needed to be kept cold.
