A designer first paints a pattern on paper then transfers it onto draft or point paper which is like graph paper. Every square represents a warp thread which will pass over a weft thread. It is then the cutters task to put the pattern on to card by punching a hole for every painted square. Gerald Brown came down to Halstead in 1922 from the North to work at Coutaulds where he was employed for 30 years as a Jacquard cutter. He is seen here putting right a card that has been punched incorrectly.
