| Lengthman - Sam Benham |
 |

Sam Benham, (left) with his son-in-law Peter Daw, after he had returned from "walking the length" on March 3rd 1956. This was the length of line he was responsible for on the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway from Chapel to Hedingham. He walked the length every week day and half on Saturday knocking any loose keys with his hammer and oiling the points in Hedingham, Halstead, Earls Colne and White Colne station yards. This he did from 1936 until illhealth forced him to stop in 1962.
