George Callahan, known as "London George" was a familiar figure from the 1930's. He tramped around the town and villages entertaining folks on a barrell organ, playing old fashioned songs and classical music, just for a few coppers in his hat. Children were delighted to see him as he allowed them to wind the handle. One local man who worked on the provisions counter in the Co-op Grocery Store in Trinity Street, used to make him up food parcels of ham and cheese pieces to help him on his way. George slept rough in barns and sheds until old age forced him to be admitted to Stisted Hall where he died in 1980.
