Stanley Downs, of Halstead, is making pork pies at Whitbread's butchery in Head Street c1957. Previously he had been employed for 5 years by Ralph Vince, for whom he made pies during the day, then in the evenings, would carry his wares round the local pubs to sell. Mr. Whitbread bought the business from Mr. Vince in 1957.
